Deeds, letters, business records, scrapbooks, notebooks, pamphlets, posters, clippings, phonograph records, photographs, and other materials about the history of Middle Island and surrounding communities including Coram, Ridge, and Yaphank. The collection includes ca. 125 deeds and mortgages, 1761-1921; records of School Districts No. 16 and No. 17 in Middle Island, including registers, 1881, 1907-1908, 1918-1928 with gaps, a teacher's contract, 1911, school assessment roll, 1911, and annual trustee reports. Will of James Swezey, 1777, bills and receipts from Edward Pfeiffer's general store in Middle Island, ca. 1910-ca. 1930; photographs, articles, and clippings on Gordon Heights, a development for Afro-Americans; daybook labeled "Yaphank Mills" with entries for 1885-1887; and miscellaneous tax receipts, ballots, election returns, and other Town of Brookhaven records. Materials written or compiled by Thomas R. Bayles include letters and notes on historical topics, copies of newspaper articles by Bayles on local history, and notebooks with clippings, photographs, and letters on a variety of topics, including local authors and poets. Also, scrapbooks on whaling, railroads, automobiles, and airplanes; transcripts of cemetery inscriptions for Union Cemetery, Middle Island and Randall Cemetery, Ridge; and ration books and certificates from World War II.
